Box Office: 'Toy Story 5' Near $600M, 'Supergirl' Bombs $68M Worldwide - Deadline

The heat wave in Europe didn’t damage the foreign box office this weekend entirely, as I’m told business is essentially steady through the region. In the same breath, a heatwave doesn’t help when authorities are advising people stay indoors. That said, the studios are telling foreign exhibs to promote air conditioning. Supergirl can cry that she was hit in the head by a World Cup soccer ball in Mexico and Brazil (which had big games on Thursday), and that the heatwave kept people at home, however, like the U.S., the real reason for falling like an asteroid is that she was overall rejected by fans around the globe with a $68M start, $30M from international in 77 markets. In France, the Toys were also No. 1 over Minions and Monsters opening there (Supergirl has landed in France yet). The new market for the Disney Pixar movie was Hong Kong where it was second highest MPA opening weekend of 2026 to date with a 48% market share. Updated territory cumes include Mexico ($48M), UK ($37.8M), China ($29.8M), France ($15.7M), Brazil ($12.6M), Australia ($12.6M), Spain ($11.2M), Korea ($10.8M), Argentina ($9M), Colombia ($8.5M), Chile ($6.7M) and Italy ($6.7M). Bear and Nikki are less than $30M away from crossing $400M at the global box office as Focus Features’ Obsession posted a $23.4M WW seventh frame ($13.6M offshore) for a running cume of $370.1M WW. Germany opened this weekend to $2.6M, well above Weapons and Sinners. Sans previews, Obsession was the No. 1 pic overall in the market this weekend, opening on 651 screens. Obsession added a strong $556K on Saturday, ranking at No. 2 in the market behind Minions & Monsters previews. In Spain, Obsession grossed $1.4M on opening weekend, ranking No. 2 behind Toy Story 5 and opening on 465 screens. An opening at this level is in-line with Nosferatu and well above Smile and Sinners. The film has scored high 7.2 (from 1,519 votes) on FilmAffinity, higher than Backrooms (6.6), The Substance (6.5), Weapons (6.6) or Sinners (6.5). The film participated in the Sitges Film Festival, winning three awards, including Jury’s Special Price and Audience Award. Singapore bowed to $772K this weekend at No. 4, including an extensive preview run. The movie has already surpassed the total lifetimes of Weapons, Sinners and Smile. Malaysia opened to to $458K at No. 3 above Weapons and more than 5x Sinners and Nosferatu. In Austria, Obsession opened to $400K above Weapons and Sinners. Indonesia opened to $343K overall this weekend at No.3, well above Smile and more than double Nosferatu and Sinners. In German-speaking Switzerland, Obsession opened this weekend to $256K, above Weapons and more than double Longlegs and The Substance. Steven Spielberg’s third global weekend of Disclosure Day beamed up $18.5M WW, $10.4M from offshore for a running global of $193.7M. Big grossing territories this weekend included Mexico ($1.4M, $9.5M cume), ranking No. 3 this weekend behind Toy Story 5 and Supergirl. France added $1.3M for a $7M cume, surpassing the lifetime of Twisters. UK accumulated another $1.2M for a $14.5M cume above Twisters and One Battle After Another at the same point and clicking past the lifetime of Arrival. Backrooms from 59 territories did $15.77M worldwide ($11.4M int’l) for a running cume of $330M WW ($184.1M domestic, $145.9M int’l). Jackass: Best and Last posted a $10.3M global opening with $1.9M overseas from 19 markets in what’s a 70% offshore footprint. The thrifty priced $10M production wasn’t meant to gross anything significant; I hear Johnny Knoxville and crew wanted a sequel, and Paramount let them deliver it. It’s evident this seventhquel is also play for the Paramount+ service ultimately. Universal’s Minions & Monsters began its offshore crusade before its July 1 North American opening with $10.3M in ten territories. France opened to $6.1M this weekend, across 817 screens, No. 2, performing closely in-line with Toy Story 5. In admissions, Saturday’s result is +17% above Minions: The Rise of Gru and very closely in-line with Despicable Me 4 (-2%). As a reminder, Despicable Me 4 opened in the summer school holidays while Minions: The Rise of Gru bowed on the last day of “La Fete Du Cinema” (Wednesday). Audience and press reception are strong, with a 3.4/5 Allociné score, ahead of Despicable Me 4 (3.1), Despicable Me 3 (2.8) and in line Minions: The Rise Of Gru (3.5). The market continues to experience an unprecedented heatwave, which saw Tuesday post the hottest day in French history. Australia opened to $2.3M overall this weekend ranking 2nd. Minions & Monsters saw a strong percentage increase from Friday to Saturday of +143%, compared to Toy Story 5’s +123%, a good sign as the box office heads into the lucrative Winter school holidays, with half of the country on holiday from Monday, June 29, and three weeks of holidays ahead. Local reviews are positive.  Belgium added a strong $233K on Saturday, taking the No. 1 spot for the day, for an estimated $755K opening weekend across 150 screens. An opening at this level is above Toy Story 5 and Despicable Me, as well as in-line with Despicable Me 3 and Despicable Me 2. Holidays in Flanders start early next week (Wednesday), with the French-speaking part following one week later. French-speaking Switzerland opened at No. 1 in the market with a healthy 30% market share. Minions & Monsters opened this weekend across 50 screens, to $239K, well above Toy Story 5. An opening at this level is the 2nd biggest of the year for an animated title, only behind Super Mario Galaxy. Staggered school holidays begin today, running until late August.   Previews not included in the above total are $824K in Germany on Saturday with the No. 1 spot in the market. Remember, Toy Story 5 is going later after the little monsters. Vietnam had $414K in previews, which is the biggest first paid preview day for a Hollywood animated pic, outgrossing Moana 2 and Hoppers. It’s also Universal’s second biggest preview result of all-time there behind Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw. Minions and Monsters ranked No. 1 in the market with a 49% market share, outgrossing the next biggest title in the market, Obsession by more than 2x. On Friday, the Netherlands delivered $351K in previews. Schools closed for the day as a result of the ongoing heatwave, with the latest Minions movie taking the No. 1 spot over Toy Story 5. The little yellow monsters head into Germany, Italy, UK, Brazil, Spain and Mexico on July 1. China is July 3.
